TDC Ghana Ltd has commenced a special revenue recovery exercise aimed at retrieving over GHS 4 million owed by some of its corporate lessees. The initiative, led by the Managing Director, Mr. Courage K.M. Nunekpeku, together with selected management and operational staff, involved visiting the premises of indebted clients to demand payment of outstanding ground rent arrears. In instances where lessees were unwilling or unprepared to settle their debts, their facilities were temporarily locked to compel compliance.
Ground rent refers to the annual payment made by the holder of a leasehold interest in public land to the lessor in consideration for the continued occupation and use of the land. The legal obligation to make this payment is explicitly stated in TDC’s standard lease agreements.
Mr. Nunekpeku emphasised that ground rent payments are non-negotiable and fundamental to national development, as they enable TDC to provide essential infrastructure, maintain public assets and deliver on its housing and urban development mandate. He further urged all organisations and individuals with outstanding rent arrears to regularise their accounts promptly in honour of their obligation to the state through TDC.
As part of the ongoing exercise, TDC announced that special recovery visits will also be extended to places of worship, including churches and mosques, and appealed to all faith-based institutions to honour their ground rent obligations in good faith.
